Allicin is a heart-healthy compound found in garlic. This particular organic compound gives garlic it’s distinctively pungent smell and is the reason why garlic is so good for us! This aromatic compound acts as a defense mechanism and keeps all types of bugs at bay due to its antibacterial and anti-fungal properties. Allicin is not activated until tissue damage occurs, therefore crushed garlic has a higher quantity of activated allicin than the whole garlic clove. Several studies have indicated that this potent compound found in garlic may help to reduce atherosclerosis, decrease blood pressure, prevent blood clots, contain anti-inflammatory properties, and function as an antioxidant.
