Well chosen and well delivered readings can enrich your wedding ceremony and give weight to your wedding vows. There is no hard and fast rule that you must have a reading in your wedding ceremony, but they can be a wonderful addition. The goal of your wedding ceremony is to create a life-long marriage. Any words that deepen the explanation of the benefits of loving well, of keeping wedding vows and living in a committed marriage will help you attain the goals you are dreaming about and working for.

Before you make final decisions on individual selections, stop and think about some broader issues:

  • Any readings you choose should relate to your life in content and style. So are you a romantic couple or are you more pragmatic? Do you have favorite authors who have written about relationship in a way that makes sense to you, deep in your heart?
  • Anyone you chose to read should be capable of conveying the meaning of the selections. Do you have friends who are professional speakers, actors or teachers? Are there people you know who read inspirational literature who might be good resources not only as readers but also as people who can suggest possible readings.
  • Both poetry and prose offer a wide variety of options. Which of these written media is the best fit for the two of you? There are wonderful writers in both areas. Which speaks to you? Remember that both popular and classic songs are poetry. Is there a song from your courtship whose words describe why you are marrying one another? You may not want to have it sung, you may just want to have someone read this.
  • A reading is a good representative for your heritage or nationality. This is a good way to say to your community that, while your future is right here with this person, your roots are important contributors to the richness of your shared life.
  • Don't use the same readings as everyone else. You don't want your
    wedding
to be a carbon copy of your friends' weddings or of some movie star's. This is your wedding. This is your relationship that is being celebrated. While certainly there are classics that are lovely and apt, because Love is, after all, Love, there are so many wonderful readings to choose from. Don't limit yourself to the beautiful but common.

The web, the library and bookstores are going to be wonderful resources. I'd be more cautious about a reading from a friend's wedding, because you're going to want your readings to be particular to you. Your community wants to support your marriage. The more they know about you, your beloved and your great love, the better able they will be to understand why you are making the promises you are and how they can celebrate the wedding vows which will be the foundation of your marriage.

Bottom Line?: Give your relationship the chance it deserves to succeed wildly, against all odds! After all, you deserve it. Your relationship deserves it!
