While we provided many moving tips in another LifeOrganizers.com article, we recently found another box containing some more valuable advice for movers.

Survival Box
When moving , so often people pack things they may immediately need in one of the moving vans or trucks. This can lead to confusions, frustration and a frazzled mover. One tip is to pack a “Survival Box.” A survival box will contain things that you need, that your new place probably doesn’t have yet- and things you may not be able to find if you packed them in boxes scattered about the truck, or trucks. Here are some ideas of what the survival box can include:

  • Light Bulbs- you’ll want to make sure you can see!
  • Linens- you’re new neighbors might be nosy!
  • Toilet Paper- self-explanatory!
  • Paper Towels- for cleanup, and temporary plates for the pizza you promised your moving buddies
  • Soap- for the bathroom
  • Garbage bags- for your waste
  • Small tools- to hang drapery, etc
  • This should be taken with you! Remember! Don’t pack this away!

Make the Rounds
Another idea to keep sane during the move

would be to tend to your regular errands and rounds. If you need a haircut, make an appointment before you move . If you need prescriptions filled, get them filled before you move. Same thing if you need your car serviced, your nails filled or your dry-cleaning done. This will do two things. First, it will make your life pre-move seem a little normal by tending to yourself. Second, finding service providers you trust in your new area may take a while. So, getting these simple things done will ease unneeded pressure of finding new services right away. If you are moving within the same vicinity, this suggestion won’t apply too much to you, but it still may be a good idea, as being busy with the move, you may let them go longer than they should.

Keep Moving Documents Together
There may be a lot of paperwork floating around that needs tending to during your mover. You may want to purchase a portable file box to keep them organized and handy. Some items you may want to include in this file box would include:
  • Moving registration number
  • Driver’s name and vehicle number
  • Phone number of moving company- both destinations!
  • Personal address book- incase you need to get in touch with someone
  • New landlord’s number (if renting)
  • Any other document pertinent to your specific move
Personal Documents
Keep all personal documents, such as social security card, passport, birth certificate, etc. in this file, as you may also need them to sign up for service, register for things, etc. There is nothing worse than needing a personal document for something, and then having to put it on hold because you have to wait until the moving truck arrives.
