Like anything that grows and evolves over time, a relationship does so in phases, and the best way to know where you are going is to see where you have been. If you aren't quite sure where your courtship stands, read on to learn about the different stages of a relationship and what to expect.

According to relationships experts, knowing the different stages of a relationship can help you in understanding where you are and where you are going, with your partner. Most people never think about these stages especially when the relationship is just starting.

The first stage is the dating stage. This is where you get know each other and where the romance happens. At this point, you both want to show the best of you to each other. It is also known as the honeymoon period, where everything is nice and lovely. The flaws in the other person are often overlooked during this period.

The next stage is the struggle stage, it can happen several months after the relationship started. This period will determine the lifespan of the relationship, whether short term or long term, leading to marriage. The excitement may begin to fade away and it's time to take things seriously. You both will begin to want to get your needs met. But remember, if you are finding flaws in the other person, he or she is probably finding flaws in you too. It is important to resolve the issues at this stage if you want to increase your chances for your relationship to survive. Honest communication is vital at this stage of a relationship. Messy breakups are also very common at this time.


The third stage is that of realizations. Relationship experts say that this is the time where you will realize that you can't change your partner. Again, you have to be cautious, talking with your partner is recommended so that you can both learn to be happy with each other, without trying to change the other. Breakups may also occur in this stage, but often in a mature way.

Commitment stage is the next one, which will happen if you have successfully survived the previous stages. Now, you have already realized that you can't change the person but you are willing to make it work. Despite everything, you want to be together in a true lifelong partnership.
