Personal Space

books-rt.jpgOrganizing personal space is very similar to making professional areas more accessible. Everyone has a preferred place to relax, read a good book, watch television or work on a hobby.  Some individuals are lucky to have an entire room that is off limits to the rest of the family.  However, most people are probably fortunate to have a corner to call their own.  So, it is important to keep it neat and organized. To begin:

•    Vamoose clutter
•    Be creative
•    Optimize storage

Vamoose clutter - Like every other aspect of daily living, leisure time and activities are often compromised because of unnecessary junk, so vamoose clutter.  For instance, avid readers have a tendency to collect books.  Some books are classics or so great, it will definitely be read again at a later date.  However, be honest.  Several volumes are simply taking up space.  So, it is time to donate them to the local library exchange program, take them to the consignment shop, or give the books to another reader.

Likewise, crafters have a similar problem.  The task can be even more daunting when going through supplies.  The process requires a five step process:

1.    Grouping
2.    Assigning
3.    Purging
4.    Containing
5.    Keeping it Up

First, take the time to group projects or like items together, to actually see what is available.  Now, make 3 piles: keepers, givers, and tossers.  Generally, most avid crafters will have plenty in each category.  Be honest!  Go ahead and keep what will be used in the near future.  Give away the items that a fellow crafter might use, and then grace the local landfill with what is left. Then, put the remaining craft supplies neatly away, and keep it organized.

Be creative - To keep leisure areas neat and contained often takes some creativity.  For instance, a child might collect stuffed animals.  However, in no time at all, the bed is covered and the child has no room to sleep at night. So buy some netting and hang it from the ceiling on corner walls. The hammock-like result is an excellent place to store furry friends.

Optimize storage- Similarly; craft areas or home libraries require space that simply may not be available. Therefore, it will take some creativity to utilize storage areas with stackable containers or shelving, making the most of limited space. Magazines and online searches will yield a plethora of ideas for personal organization.

In Summary

Life is too busy and too short to spend any time being disorganized at work, home, and leisure.  Rather than spend time in a state of confusion and frustration, recognize the importance of organization.  Then, save the time and energy left over to enjoy what really matter in life, like friends and family.
